It was created by Billy Markus from Portland, Oregon, and Jackson Palmer from Sydney, Australia, who envisioned it as a fun, approachable cryptocurrency that would appeal to a broader audience beyond the core Bitcoin community.
Since its inception, Dogecoin quickly developed a strong online community and gained significant mainstream attention, especially in 2021, when prominent figures like Elon Musk publicly expressed their support for the coin. On May 8, 2021, DOGE reached an all-time high market cap of nearly $90 billion at a price of $0.70, representing a massive increase since its creation and briefly placing it among the world's top 10 cryptocurrencies.
In early 2022, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin confirmed he was helping Dogecoin explore a potential migration from its current **Proof of Work (PoW)** consensus mechanism to a more energy-efficient Proof of Stake (PoS) system. This effort, referred to as "Project Sakura," is aimed at lowering the coin's energy consumption and increasing transaction speeds. However, as of late 2022 and early 2023, Dogecoin developers have stated that no such plan has been finalized and that the transition is still a proposal that needs community approval.
Dogecoin has its own blockchain and a mining system that is similar to Litecoin's. While it is a spinoff of Litecoin (which itself is a spinoff of Bitcoin), DOGE differentiates itself in several ways. Unlike Bitcoin, which has a capped supply of 21 million coins, Dogecoin was designed to be abundant. There are approximately 130 billion DOGE in circulation, and miners produce another 10,000 every minute. It is worth noting that developers have not made any major changes to the coin's core protocol since 2015.
Dogecoin has primarily been used as a tipping system on platforms like Reddit and Twitter to reward users for creating or sharing quality content. People can acquire DOGE through solo mining, by participating in a mining pool, or through websites that function as "faucets" for the token.
